Much of Heather's personality is characterized by her forced naivety (which will be discussed in a bit more detail below). Shy but easily clingy, bursting with love yet unable to understand or empathize with others, she feels deeply lonely, keeping herself in stasis to cope with her anxiety. She dreams of finally being able to push past that and build a life for herself—to not have to feel so weak and vulnerable. Wants to believe the world is fair, but can't be so sure.

backstory

Heather was only five when, due to factors unknown to her, her mother would become completely bedridden by mental illness. As years went by without improvement, this threatened their financial stability, and her father had to be away at work near constantly in order to keep the family afloat. Beau was required to learn how to take care of the house, Heather, and his mother when he was only thirteen, and having barely remembered a life that was any different, Heather grew up assuming her family structure to be normal (at least the first time around).

Beau and Heather deeply love each other, but Beau's love can also be coddling and demeaning. Beau being insistent on solving every problem and doing every chore, Heather is stunted in emotional growth and deeply afraid of any responsibilities, causing her to shirk them, which causes Beau to just do them for her, and the cycle continues. They are extremely codependent: Beau feels purposeless without being his sister's savior, and Heather feel purposeless without having someone to save her, so it changes everything when she takes action to prevent his suicide. It's a role switch between them she doesn't quite know how to perform yet, made especially difficult by her confusion as to why Beau would want to kill himself at all.

Knowing she can always trust Erin to be truthful is both a vice and a virtue. Sometimes, Heather wants to know if her worldview is wrong—having holes poked into Beau's idea of danger lurking around every corner can make her heart flutter with hope—sometimes, it just scares her too much, back into her cocoon. In the end, though, she always comes back to her. Erin has been their neighbor and Beau's friend for a decade, so even if her way can be abrasive, Heather can always trust her intentions.
